Immigration officials concerned about missing underage asylum seekers

About 30 unaccompanied minor asylum seekers who have come to Finland have gone missing since 2014, estimates the Finnish Immigration Service. The agency said that most cases of children whose trails have gone cold involve boys between the ages of 14 and 17.

 

A fresh report by Finnish immigration officials suggests that about thirty asylum seekers who came to Finland as unaccompanied minors have gone missing since 2014. The unaccounted for children are between the ages of 14 and 17 and most are boys, the report suggested.

 

The immigration service tried to identify the factors behind the disappearances by reaching out to officials such as reception centre employees and youth workers.

 

The agency said that a key motive for the youths stealing away from reception centres appeared to be fear of the repercussions of the Dublin agreement, which requires asylum seekers to be turned back to apply for asylum in the first European country they entered.  It would effectively mean deportation from Finland.

 

Officials also speculated that in some cases, unaccompanied minors might be afraid of having their asylum applications turned down.

 

The agency report concluded that the youngsters appeared to have independently decided to move on without informing others, but it noted that in some cases there were hints that other individuals might have played a role in the children’s disappearance.

 

A total of 70 applications voided

 

Altogether immigration officials voided asylum applications in the case of 70 unaccompanied minors – some because there were strong indications that they were "of the age of majority" while in other cases the applicants were known to have returned to their countries of origin.

 

At the beginning of this year the EU’s law enforcement agency Europol estimated that at least 10,000 unaccompanied minors who had come to Europe as asylum seekers had disappeared since their arrival.

 

Officials have described lone children as being in a vulnerable position and Europol has warned that organised crime rings may try to take advantage of them.

 

The Finnish Immigration Service said that it was cooperating with other official bodies to pin down potential incidents of crime.

They will have the run of the land and use of the country's police, even though Liechtenstein has one of the lowest crime rates in the area.

 

The new temporary 'owners' of country will be presented with a symbolic key to the country in a ceremony at the state parliament.
